As communications products increasingly utilize multi-function microprocessors, it is often more efficient to replace, rather than repair, defective components.
This changing technology coupled with diminishing parts costs and rising labor cost has given birth to a relatively new concept in communications maintenance. It's called Flat Rate Service. The fact is that Flat Rate Service can be a good alternative, depending on the manufacturers ability to support the program. The most affordable plans are offered by ICOM, Relm/BK, Ritron, and TEKK with reasonable cost and turnaround times. The "best" in terms of making things easy, getting the job done quickly and efficiently is Motorola (personal opinion you understand). However, there is a cost associated with being best and the one who pays that cost is the user!
If you want your radio back in a hurry, someone has to pay expedited shipping charges. The one providing the service must have the staff and equipment on hand to perform repair/exchange functions quickly and that can be expensive! As a general rule, you can assume a flat rate repair to range between 25% to 50% of the original equipment price, with 40% being about average.
